Reading Russian cursive: the letters that look alike

Russian cursive turns several printed letters into runs of identical humps, which is why the word «лишили» is famous as a row of bumps. The tells:

  • т looks like a Latin m (three humps) in cursive
  • ш looks like a Latin w; a bar underneath distinguishes it from т
  • м looks like a Latin m with pointed tops
  • л looks like a Latin l with a lead-in; easily confused with м
  • и looks like a Latin u
  • п looks like a Latin n
  • д written like a Latin g or a д with a tail depending on the school

Real Cyrillic, real fonts

Reading Russian cursive

Russian handwriting turns several print letters into strokes that look alike: т becomes a shape like m, ш like w, and the two are told apart by a line above т or below ш; и and п, г and ч, and л and м are the other pairs learners confuse. The lookalike trap

The fancy text generator has a Cyrillic lookalike style that swaps Latin letters for Cyrillic ones of a similar shape, for a Russian look in a bio. It is decoration for Latin text. Pasting real Russian into it, or pasting its output into a Russian field, corrupts the words, because the swapped letters are not the letters a Russian reader expects. Use this page for real Cyrillic and that style only for Latin decoration.
