How to write capital X

  1. Start at the top left and pull a curved downstroke to the bottom right.
  2. Lift and draw a second curved stroke from the top right to the bottom left, crossing the first.
  3. Lift the pen; X does not join the next letter.

How to write lowercase x

  1. Start at the baseline and rise to the midline.
  2. Pull a curved downstroke to the baseline and exit to the right.
  3. Add the crossing stroke through the middle after finishing the word.

Common mistakes

  • A common slip is drawing x as two straight print strokes, which leaves a gap on both sides.
  • With the capital, learners try to join it to the next letter; X ends with a stroke that stops, so lift the pen and start the next letter fresh.

Joining x to other letters

The x exits from the baseline with a short upstroke that becomes the entry stroke of the next letter.
