Three layouts

Interlocking tightens the tracking so the initials overlap by about a fifth of their width, the way engraved monograms nest their letters. Stacked sets each initial on its own centred line. Circular places the letters along an arc so they follow a round frame, a badge or a lid. Frames are a circle or a diamond drawn in the same colour.

Traditional ordering

A personal monogram in the traditional style puts the surname initial in the middle, larger, with the first-name initial on the left and the middle-name initial on the right: for Anna Marie Jones, A J M. A couple's monogram uses the two first initials around the shared surname initial. Type the initials in the order you want them shown; the generator does not reorder them.

Fonts for monograms

Formal faces with tall, looped capitals (Great Vibes, Pinyon Script, Monsieur La Doulaise) make the classic engraved look; display faces (Pacifico, Lobster) make a bolder mark that survives embroidery and small print. Interlocking works best with a face whose capitals have open counters; stacked and circular layouts are forgiving of any face.

Sizes for common uses

An embroidered shirt-cuff monogram is usually about 1 inch tall; a towel monogram 2 to 3 inches; a wax seal about 1 inch across; a tote bag 4 inches or more. Export a PNG at 300 DPI and check the physical-size readout, or export the SVG and let the maker scale it.

Frames, colour and the two SVGs

The frame draws a circle or diamond around the initials at a fixed margin and is included in the framed SVG download from the preview; the export panel writes the letters alone, so a cutting machine or embroidery digitiser receives the shape without a border. Colour applies to both. For a two-tone monogram, export twice with different colours and stack the layers in your editor. For a cutting machine, use the Cutting profile with Weld on so overlapping initials cut as one shape; for embroidery, hand the SVG to the digitiser, since monogram letters are usually stitched as a satin fill, which is why heavier faces hold up better.

Checking legibility

Interlocking layouts overlap the letters by design. Read the result at the size it will be used, because overlaps that look elegant at 400 pixels can merge into a blot on a shirt cuff.
