How to write capital J
- Start at the baseline and sweep up into a tall loop to the top line.
- Come down through the loop and continue below the baseline.
- Loop back up to the baseline and finish with a short tail to the right.
How to write lowercase j
- Start at the baseline and rise to the midline.
- Pull a downstroke below the baseline and loop back up to the line.
- Exit to the right, and dot the j after finishing the word.
Common mistakes
- A common slip is dotting j over its loop instead of above its stem.
- With the capital, learners stop the final stroke short instead of carrying it into the next letter; the tail of J is the join.
Joining j to other letters
The j ends in a loop below the baseline. The loop closes on the way up and its tail runs into the next letter from the baseline.
- j → hloop join
